Keynote Speaker

Dr. Dan Evans, Vice Provost for Strategic Initiatives for Ohio University
Technology: Changing the Way We Do School

Dan Evans photo

Dr. Dan Evans is no stranger to education having made a career of being an educator or education administrator. Even upon stepping down after a 39-year career, he is still actively engaged in education as he now oversees higher education partnerships on behalf of Ohio University with 13 different Community Colleges, twelve in Ohio and one in West Virginia.

Dr. Evans currently serves as Vice Provost for Strategic Initiatives for Ohio University. In his former positions, Dan served as Dean of the Wright State University Lake Campus, then as Dean of Ohio University Southern, and more recently as the Executive Dean of Ohio University Regional Campuses and Vice Provost for E-Learning. In that latter role, he was responsible for five regional campuses (Chillicothe, Eastern, Lancaster, Southern, and Zanesville), two centers (Pickerington and Proctorville), as well as the extended outreach and on-line missions of Ohio University, representing over one-third of the total enrollment of the institution.

Dan began his college studies after high school graduation at the Ohio University “Ironton Branch” and later relocated to Athens where he was the first from his family to graduate from college. He went on to earn a master’s degree at Morehead State University in Kentucky, and a PhD from Ohio University. Dan is committed to the access mission of higher education and is a self-described “lifelong learner” who has himself completed course work at ten different universities.

Dan now makes his home along the Ohio River in Haverhill with his wife Beth who is a retired early childhood and elementary school teacher.

"The contributions you make every day, whether in the classroom or in support of the academic enterprise, are truly a labor of the heart. I have had the privilege of working with an outstanding faculty, dedicated to bringing out the best in each of their students. In addition, I have seen firsthand a staff committed to serving students above self,” he says.

Evans truly walks the talk and we’re pleased he is sharing his wisdom and insights. He brings his experience with technology both as a student over the years and as an innovative and strategic partner for Ohio University to his keynote presentation at this year’s AURCO conference. His presentation entitled, “Technology: Changing the Way We Do School” is in direct alignment with our 2012 AURCO Conference theme, “Innovative Education for the Internet Generation.”

Steven Angle Photo

Dr. Steven Angle, Provost, Wright State University

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Steven Angle, Provost of Wright State University. Under the leadership of President David Hopkins and Provost Angle, the university has taken the lead in creating productive linkages with businesses and other institutions in the counties that it serves. Dr. Angle will speak to how the Lake Campus fits into the university’s broader efforts and, by extension, how regional campuses can enhance their role and their value to the communities that they serve.

Steven R. Angle is Wright State University's provost and chief academic officer, overseeing the colleges, schools, libraries, research centers, and institutes. He is also responsible for the divisions of Advancement, Business and Finance, Curriculum and Instruction, Enrollment Management, Research, and Student Affairs.

A nationally recognized researcher in synthetic organic chemistry, Angle, Ph.D., earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of California, Irvine, his master's in organic chemistry from UCLA, and his doctorate in organic chemistry from UC-Irvine.

Angle was dean of the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of California, Riverside, before being named provost at Wright State in 2007. Angle is involved in implementing Wright State's campus-wide strategic plan. The five-year plan defines the university's role in the world and its future direction in the region and beyond. "We want to be known and admired for our diversity and have a transformative impact on the lives of our students and the communities we serve," Angle says.

The provost has helped define the Ohio Centers of Excellence at Wright State, which range from human-centered innovation to medical readiness. He is working to help them realize their potential, saying they could help define Wright State and have a huge impact on the region. Angle has also been responsible for the campus budget process and is deeply involved in the University System of Ohio's strategic plan, which includes converting Wright State from quarters to semesters.

In addition, the provost has ushered in a new generation of leaders at Wright State, overseeing the hiring of an array of deans and associate provosts. Developing Wright State's international programs and partnerships has also been a key focus for the provost.

Dr. Marcia Baxter Magolda, Learning Partnerships: Helping Students Develop Self-Authorship

Marcia Baxter Magolda Photo

Marcia Baxter Magolda, Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership at Miami University of Ohio, teaches student development theory and inquiry courses in the College Student Personnel masters program. Her scholarship addresses the evolution of learning and development in college and young adult life, the role of gender in development, and pedagogy to promote self-authorship. Dr. Baxter Magolda will lead us in an interactive session on learning and student development.

Marcia Baxter Magolda will share narratives from her 22-year study of young adult learning and development, highlighting cognitive, identity, and relational growth necessary for achieving common college learning goals. Discussion of video clips of these narratives will give participants an opportunity to explore the extent to which their students experience this developmental journey. Marcia will also describe the Learning Partnerships Model and how to use reflective conversations to promote growth away from authority-dependence toward self-authorship, or the internal capacity to choose one’s beliefs, values, identity, and relationships.

Dr. Gene Poor has been named the first Ernest & Dorothy Hamilton Professor of Entrepreneurship at Bowling Green State University. The endowed professorship in the College of Business Administration was created with a gift from internationally known Olympic skater and Bowling Green native Scott Hamilton in memory of his parents, both of whom taught at the University.

Dr. Poor, who has taught for Bowling Green since 1972, is a professor of Visual Communication Technology. He has been involved with the entrepreneurship minor degree program, having taught the Innovation Technology and Introductory Entrepreneurship courses.

He also is a part owner and “the chief imagination officer” for LifeFormations. The successful Bowling Green company designs and builds static and animated characters. One recent project was creating 50 historically accurate characters depicting the life of Abraham Lincoln for the Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, Ill. The more than 2,000 animated and static characters built by the company have been seen by an estimated 10 million people. About a third of the employees at his company are BGSU graduates who have completed technology internships there.
